How to Clean and Store Natural Gemstones

Safe gemstone care basics for cleaning, storing, and protecting crystals and jewelry stones.

Updated June 8, 2026 - 5 min read

Avoid harsh chemicals

Many gemstones should not be exposed to bleach, acids, perfumes, or aggressive cleaners. A soft cloth and mild soap are often safer for routine care.

Store pieces separately

Harder stones can scratch softer stones. Store jewelry and loose gemstones in separate pouches, boxes, or compartments.

Be careful with heat and sunlight

Some stones can fade or change with prolonged heat or strong sunlight. Display pieces thoughtfully and ask for stone-specific care guidance.
